The Natural Environment
Natural Environment
The natural environment are like the primary and secondary forests. They consist of many kinds of trees, shrubs, plants and flowers. These forests provide a natural habitat for a wide variety of animals to live in and find their food. It is important for us to preserve each species of fauna and flora so that the future generations can still have and see those species in their life time. If we remove or destroy the natural environment of forests, we will lose all these plants and animals that live in them. Once they become extinct, we will lose them forever ... and our children and grandchildren will not know what these animals are like ... their shape, size, smell and behaviour. Many forest plants are used in traditional and modern medicines. Wild flowers like jungle orchids are very rare and are going extinct.
Built Environment
The built environment consist of everything built by man like all kinds of buildings and parks. In order for man to build these buildings or parks, they have to remove some natural environment. The important thing to do here is not to remove or destroy too much natural environment and not to overbuild. When land is scarce, and in order to build more, man has to build upwards so as to keep as much of the natural environment as possible. If land is plentiful, buildings can be lower rise and occupy large tracts of land.
Landscape Architecture
Landscape architecture consists of both the built and natural environment. A park e.g. is a landscaped architecture. Landscape architecture consists of (1) hardscape e.g. fountains, footpaths, pergolas, gazebos, seats, lamp-posts, lights, play structures and anything that are created by man; and (2) softscape e.g. trees, plants, shrubs, grass and flowers. Landscaping can be used as a tool to help keep or conserve our natural environment from being destroyed completely by planting and replanting forest trees into our built environment. By doing that, the animals that live in the forest will have a new home in our landscaped parks e.g. birds and monkeys, just to name a few.
